Huawei P40 Pro to come with Sony-made Quad Quad Bayer sensor

The main camera on the Huawei P40 Pro will reportedly be built on a 52MP image sensor (1/1.33”). New info suggests that this sensor will be a custom design by Sony and will feature “16-in-1” technology.

It’s also called “Quad Quad Bayer” as it does two 4-in-1 conversions to reach the 16-in-1 stage. This will only be used for videos and photos shot under very dark conditions. By our calculations, 52MP will drop to 3.25MP. which is good enough for 1080p videos (photos will probably use some form of digital upscaling).

For daytime shots, only one 4-in-1 conversion will be performed, resulting in 13MP shots. This is likely the traditional Quad Bayer binning process (or Quad RYYB, perhaps).

The P40 Pro is expected to come with a 10x optical zoom camera. To pull this off, Huawei will is said to be using a dual prism design (current periscope cams have only one prism). This is likely needed to fit the module in the phone despite the very long focal length.

Huawei has trademarked various terms such as Quad Curve Overflow (probably the quad-curved screen), Ultra Vision Camera and Ultra Vision Sensor, plus 5G AR. We expect to hear what these terms and what they mean at the unveiling event scheduled for March.

Huawei P40 Pro Premium to get 10x zoom camera

Huawei P40 Pro render with four cameras on the back was seen recently, a knock against rumors of a penta-camera setup. Today, new renders appear that show both four and five cameras

The second set of renders come from the reliable @evleaks. What seems to be happening is that Huawei will add three new phones to the flagship P-series instead of the usual two. Apple did it and so did Samsung, so why not Huawei?

Having a closer look reveals something even more interesting – the premiere model (the one with five cameras), dubbed Huawei P40 Pro Premium Edition, has a periscope telephoto lens with 240mm focal length.

Huawei P40 Pro Premium to get 10x zoom camera

Assuming that the main camera has a 24mm lens, that’s 10x optical zoom. Compare that to the four camera model, the Huawei P40 Pro, which has a 125mm periscope lens. That should be 5x optical zoom.

Both versions have an 18mm ultra wide camera. The two additional cameras on the P40 Pro Premium are probably a dedicated macro cam and a 3D ToF sensor. The P40 Pro will have a ToF sensor, according to Teme, another leakster covering the P40 phones.

As for the base model, the Huawei P40, we already saw that it will have a 17mm ultra wide and a standard 80mm telephoto lens (so, 3x optical zoom). According to Teme, the Huawei P40 will have a 52MP main camera (1/1.3” sensor), 40MP cine camera (1/1.5” sensor) and an 8MP tele camera.
