According to the Russian newspaper Izvestia, prices of electronic products in Russia have begun to rise as concerns about sanctions heat up.
A source close to an online retailer told Izvestia that the channel is expected to raise prices on items on sale by 10-30%.
The standard price of the iPhone 13 with 128 GB of memory is 79,990 rubles (about 6,007.25 yuan), and it is now priced at nearly 104,000 rubles (about 7,810.4 yuan) in retail channels.
Another source told Izvestia that so far, only the price of the iPhone smartphone has risen, and other price increases have yet to be decided.
“Izvestia” quoted expert analysis as saying that imported electronic products are often transported from China to the Netherlands by rail, where they complete customs clearance and distribute to Russia, so they face potential risks in the settlement chain and payment system.
As early as January, demand for smartphones in Russia surged, with consumers buying ahead of time out of fears of U.S. sanctions. On the Ozon e-commerce platform, smartphone sales in January 2022 increased by 50% year-on-year.
Previously, the United States has announced stricter trade restrictions on electronic products against Russia. The “Izvestia” believes that for smartphones, the same method as it was used against Huawei in 2019 may also be used, banning the reception of Android operating system updates, and prohibiting the use of Android operating systems in Download Google apps on smartphones released after sanctions were imposed.
