Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game or an MMORPG combines aspects of two very different genres of video games, RPG and MMO. While MMOs are typically multiplayer games with many players interacting with each other. RPGs are designed to give players charge of the character in the story, making decisions based on dialogs.
Both these genres are typically based on fantasy world or some science fiction, RPGs and MMOs combine to create an MMORPG, perfect rendition of the two genres. The genre even has its own directory of gaming slang. For instance, World of Warcraft is based on a fantasy world, Star Wars: The Old Republic is based on the science fiction movie series Star Wars.
While most MMORPGs differ slightly from the genre, they’re still a part of the category. MMORPGs are built with a special emphasis on character development, with some character progression system.
To give an example of MMORPGs, World of Warcraft is the most popular game of the genre. In addition, Star Wars: The Old Republic is the fastest growing MMORPG within the first three days of its launch, with 1 million players.
